Special Enrollment Periods Explained

Generally, a Special Enrollment Period lasts for 60 days after the date of the qualifying life event. Within that time period, you’re able to purchase a new health insurance plan, and you should have the same plan options as you would during Open Enrollment Period.

If your household income is currently below 150% of the federal poverty level, you may be eligible for an ACA plan via Special Enrollment Period throughout the year. You’ll most likely also be eligible for financial assistance toward the premium of health plan coverage, which could lower your monthly payments, in some cases to $0, if you qualify. Have questions?

You can sign up for an individual major medical plan once a year during the annual open enrollment period. In most states for 2023, open enrollment takes place from November 1 through December 15, each year.

What happens if you fail to get coverage during open enrollment? You'll need to qualify for a special enrollment period due to a life event such as moving to a new ZIP code, having a baby, losing job-based coverage, or getting married. A special enrollment period offers a brief amount of time, usually up to 60 days from the qualifying life event, in which you can sign up for or switch your Obamacare plan.

If you miss open enrollment and don't qualify for special enrollment, then you won't be able to sign up for major medical insurance until the next open enrollment period. That coverage will be effective January 1 of the upcoming year.
