Health Insurance Coverage and Wegovy

In today's world, where healthcare costs can be a major concern, having the right health insurance is crucial. If you're considering Wegovy, a prescription medication for weight management with the active ingredient being semaglutide, it's essential to understand how health insurance may come into play. In this article, we'll explore the connection between health insurance and Wegovy, what insurance covers Wegovy, and provide you with valuable insights into coverage, costs, and how to utilize your plan’s benefits.

What Is Wegovy?

Wegovy is a prescription medication that has gained attention for its role in weight management. It contains semaglutide, a hormone that regulates appetite and metabolism, making it a promising treatment option for adults with obesity or those who are overweight with weight-related health issues.

Health Insurance and Prescription Medications

Understanding how health insurance covers prescription medications is crucial. Most insurance plans have a list of covered drugs called a formulary, which is often organized into different tiers. These tiers can affect how much you'll pay for a specific medication.

Wegovy and Health Insurance Coverage

Now, let's focus on how health insurance may cover Wegovy. Coverage can vary from plan to plan, so it's essential to review your specific policy. In general, insurance companies may provide coverage for Wegovy, but several factors influence this:

  • Medical Necessity: Insurance companies often require that medications like Wegovy are deemed medically necessary for coverage. Your healthcare provider will determine if Wegovy is appropriate for your weight management needs.
  • Prior Authorization: Some insurance plans may require prior authorization before covering Wegovy. Your doctor will need to provide detailed information about why this medication is necessary for your treatment.

Coverage Criteria

In order to get Wegovy covered by your health insurance, you’ll need  to meet certain qualifications that fulfill the coverage criteria. Factors that insurance companies consider may include your BMI (Body Mass Index), the presence of weight-related health issues, and past weight loss efforts.

Wegovy Costs and Copayments

Wegovy is administered through a weekly injection, and the typical expense for a four-week supply ranges from $1,500 to $1,800, depending on where you obtain your prescription. On an annual basis, this translates to costs ranging from $18,000 to $21,600 per year.

Health insurance can help with costs, with it, Wegovy prescriptions can cost as little as $25/month. However, it's important to understand your plan's benefits and costs because there are also premiums, out of pocket costs, copayments, and deductibles.

Even with those, if you don't have insurance, Wegovy is going to be very expensive out of pocket.

What Insurance Covers Wegovy?

If you are considering Wegovy, selecting the right insurance plan can make a significant difference in coverage and costs. When choosing a plan, consider the coverage provided for prescription medications and whether Wegovy is on the formulary.

Insurance plans that cover Wegovy will depend on the type of policy.

  1. ACA Health Insurance and Employer Major Medical - You might wonder does Obamacare cover Wegovy? Unlike short term plans, Major Medical Insurance offered through your employer or through the ACA health insurance marketplace will provide coverage if your doctor feels Wegovy is appropriate for treating your medical condition. Common ACA insurance carriers include United Healthcare, Aetna, Cigna, BlueCross BlueShield, Molina, and Oscar Insurance Company.
  2. Short term health insurance - These plans cost much less than ACA health insurance because they don’t have coverage for pre-existing conditions and prescriptions like Wegovy. STM is intended to be used during temporary gaps in coverage for unexpected accidents and illness (claims for Wegovy will be denied because obesity is a chronic condition).
  3. Hospital indemnity insurance - These are cash reimbursements for hospital visits and do not cover Wegovy.
  4. Critical illness insurance - does not offer coverage for Wegovy but some plans offer SingleCare, which is a prescription savings service offering fast and easy access to consistently low prices on prescription drugs. Save up to 80% on prescriptions, and on average, 45% lower than retail. In many cases, less than the cost through an insurance plan. You will only pay for the prescriptions you need, at the pharmacy of your choice. There are no membership fees, no premiums, and zero cost to join. Use SingleCare for your prescriptions when:
    1. Your prescriptions are not covered by your health insurance
    2. Your prescription is subject to a deductible
    3. Your copay is higher than the SingleCare price
  5. Accident insurance - Accident insurance does not cover Wegovy
  6. Telemedicine - Telemedicine gets you connected with doctors who could prescribe you Wegovy, but telemedicine itself won’t pay for it.

Medicare and Wegovy

Original Medicare, which includes Part A, Part B, and Part D, does not provide coverage for Wegovy.

Medicare Part D is designed to work in conjunction with Original Medicare, offering coverage for prescription drugs. Unfortunately, it's important to note that Part D does not include medications intended for weight loss because Medicare excludes weight loss medications used for cosmetic purposes, as outlined in the Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit Manual.

This exclusion policy traces back to 2003 when specific weight loss drugs, such as Fen-Phen, posed more risks than benefits. Nevertheless, it's important to highlight that Original Medicare does cover weight loss counseling and specific bariatric surgeries for individuals aged 65 and older who are dealing with obesity.

If you're considering using Wegovy, be prepared to cover the costs out-of-pocket mentioned earlier.

Wegovy's official website notes the following: "Regrettably, Medicare does not offer coverage for obesity-related medications. However, there are certain Medigap and Medicare Advantage plans for retirees that do. If you possess one of these plans, we recommend checking with the plan administrator for more information."

Medicare Advantage and Wegovy

At present, there are no Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement plans that include Wegovy in their coverage. This is because the primary use of Wegovy is for weight loss. To potentially secure coverage for Wegovy under your plan, you must go through the process of prior authorization. Given the current regulations regarding weight loss medications, approval is unlikely unless it is directly related to the management of type 2 diabetes.

In 2023, there was a proposed legislative move to include weight loss medications under Medicare coverage, specifically Novo Nordisk's Ozempic and Wegovy. However, removing the existing restriction could have significant financial implications for both Medicare and its beneficiaries. Despite the potential costs, advocacy groups are actively striving to expand access to these medications.

For individuals who are new to enrolling in Medicare and are dealing with diabetes, Ozempic could be a viable option. Ozempic is similar to Wegovy, but its primary focus is on managing type 2 diabetes, with weight loss benefits as an additional advantage.

If you're interested in understanding Ozempic's coverage options, a licensed agent can assist you. They can assess whether there are Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plans or Medicare Part D prescription drug plans that provide coverage for Ozempic.

If you have additional questions or are considering switching plans, our licensed agents are available to help you explore the various choices within Medicare Advantage plans.

How to Navigate Insurance for Wegovy

Navigating the insurance system can be complex, but there are steps you can take if you encounter challenges. If your insurance denies coverage for Wegovy, you can consider the appeals process. Additionally, some patient assistance programs and manufacturer support may help if you don't have insurance.

In the journey of managing your weight with Wegovy, health insurance can be a valuable resource. It's essential to understand the coverage criteria and costs associated with this prescription medication. By choosing the right insurance plan and navigating the system effectively, you can access the benefits of Wegovy while managing your healthcare expenses.
